The US District Court for the Southern District of Illinois granted a preliminary injunction in the 2ALC-supported case of Barnett v. Raoul and three other related lawsuits in Illinois that challenge the constitutionality of the state’s unconstitutional new Protect Illinois Communities Act gun ban. Among other things, Governor Pritzker’s PICA law bans the sale or transfer of any semi-automatic firearm designated by the state as an “assault weapon” and bans certain magazines based on their capacity. Last night, the Alabama Legislature adjourned sine die from its 2023 legislative session. This session saw scheduled hearings for a few anti-gun bills, but the NRA, along with our members and Second Amendment supporters, was successful in making sure these bills did not progress in the legislative process and were defeated this session.

Monday was the deadline for the defendants of the consolidated cases challenging Illinois’ new firearm and magazine bans to file their briefs with the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed the new law into effect on January 10th of this year. How did that go? Well the state’s attorneys submitted outright lies and falsehoods to the court. Today, the Maine Senate officially killed Legislative Document 1000, which would have established a firearm range safety group within the Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife. This legislation would have been the first step in undermining Maine’s strong range protection laws. Thanks to the strong response of NRA members and Second Amendment supporters, the bill was defeated. NRA-ILA would like to thank all lawmakers who defended the Second Amendment for law-abiding citizens in the Pine Tree State.

On Tuesday, anti-gun Gov. Ned Lamont inked his signature on more Second Amendment restrictions in Connecticut.  The Governor signed H.6667 which contained several firearm restrictions, including a ban on open carry and the adoption of gun rationing, limiting a person to 3 pistols per month.  The bill also bans and requires registration of Connecticut "others" and '94 prebans.  The Legislature didn't stop there.  This terrible bill also has restrictive mandatory storage provisions, additional FFL regulations and body armor purchase restrictions.

Although the [California Unsafe Handgun Act]’s stated goal is safety, Biofire asserts that the UHA stifles innovation in firearm safety in two  ways. First, by mandating a specific, novel, never-before-commercialized microstamping technology, the UHA requires  emerging companies like Biofire to spend limited financial, research, and development resources to attempting (sic) implementation of the government’s specifically and arbitrarily designated technology. It is worth noting that no company has implemented microstamping in a commercial firearm in the more than 15 years since the microstamping concept was first introduced by California lawmakers. Bryan Range pleaded guilty in 1995 to food stamp fraud in Pennsylvania. He served three years probation, paid restitution and a small fine. He also lost his gun rights. That’s because “his conviction was classified as a Pennsylvania misdemeanor punishable by up to five years’ imprisonment. That conviction precludes Range from possessing a firearm because federal law generally makes it ‘unlawful for any person . . . who has been convicted in any court, of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year’ to ‘possess in or affecting commerce, any firearm or ammunition.’” Range sued, arguing that he’d been wrongly deprived of his right to keep and bear arms. As we noted last week, three court injunctions are currently in place blocking the ATF’s enforcement of its arbitrary about face rule that now regulates previously legal brace-equipped pistols as short barreled rifles under the NFA. The three cases in question were brought by, among others, three gun rights organizations; the Firearms Policy Coalition, Gun Owners of America and the Second Amendment Foundation. The judges who issued those injunctions ruled that they apply to all members of the three gun rights groups. In Chicago, local political leaders have tried to rebrand gang violence as gun violence. In reality, guns don’t shoot up Windy City neighborhoods, but gang bangers certainly do. And here we are, almost five months after Governor Pritzker signed a gun and magazine ban, and gang members fearlessly unload on their rivals, killing one and wounding at least three others.
