- Biofire: California’s Handgun Roster Limits Buyers’ Choices to a Pool to Guns With Fewer Safety Featuresby Grace Stevens on June 7, 2023 at 9:00 am
Although the [California Unsafe Handgun Act]’s stated goal is safety, Biofire asserts that the UHA stifles innovation in firearm safety in two ways. First, by mandating a specific, novel, never-before-commercialized microstamping technology, the UHA requires emerging companies like Biofire to spend limited financial, research, and development resources to attempting (sic) implementation of the government’s specifically and arbitrarily designated technology. It is worth noting that no company has implemented microstamping in a commercial firearm in the more than 15 years since the microstamping concept was first introduced by California lawmakers. - Skulls Full of Mush: GWU Students Worry More About Armed Police Than Violent Criminalsby John Boch on June 6, 2023 at 5:00 pm
Students at the Washington DC-based George Washington University are vehemently opposed to arming the school’s police officers. They protested it earlier this spring and now that the change has been implemented without the sky actually falling, the school’s delicate souls still aren’t happy about it. Why? Because these snowflakes believe that they face greater risk from armed police officers than they do from violent criminals. In the heart of D.C. It isn’t clear if ‘higher education’ in this case refers to the level of matriculation or the average consumption of marijuana by the school’s students. - Third Circuit Court of Appeals Invalidates Federal Law Depriving People Sentenced to More Than One Year in Jail of Their Gun Rightsby Dan Zimmerman on June 6, 2023 at 3:11 pm
Bryan Range pleaded guilty in 1995 to food stamp fraud in Pennsylvania. He served three years probation, paid restitution and a small fine. He also lost his gun rights. That’s because “his conviction was classified as a Pennsylvania misdemeanor punishable by up to five years’ imprisonment. That conviction precludes Range from possessing a firearm because federal law generally makes it ‘unlawful for any person . . . who has been convicted in any court, of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year’ to ‘possess in or affecting commerce, any firearm or ammunition.’” Range sued, arguing that he’d been wrongly deprived of his right to keep and bear arms.
